Changes at Age Four (Continued):

An Aunt and Her Marriage.

We have already alluded to the sole maternal aunt of our protagonist. She is the person that saw fit to take the young boy and his mother to visit an obstetrician during his infancy. At that time he was not gaining weight and was very sickly. Perhaps he should have been allowed to pass away. The world may have been a better place if such had happened. But with the medical advancements and expertise of our day we are helping many non tough human specimens to continue living. The social climax will come when such medical expertise becomes harder to come by, especially for the non wealthy. It will once more become a period of the survival of the fittest, especially the richest and the most healthy. But a formula was provided by the obstetrician and the boy continued to live.

The aunt lived with her father, the boy's maternal grandfather, a widower that loved this first grandchild very much. The man was a jovial sort with a great sense of humor. He was comfortable, secure, and laid back. The boy loved this grandfather very much and the aunt, too. They were the drivers for many jaunts and errands when the boy's mother needed or wanted transportation, so they saw a lot of each other. The boy would follow his grandfather into the cellar workshop, an inspiring place where everything not only had its place, but was in its place as well.

The aunt took the boy here and there also. During the mother's pregnancy she and her father had him at their place quite a lot. She taught school during the day, but she was available during the afternoon and evening. She was also engaged to be married, so she took her nephew to her fiancee's house many times in the next town over. She was his favorite. They had a very close bond. And he was her favorite as well. As the date for her wedding rapidly approached, she requested that he should be the bearer of her husband's and her wedding rings.
